Saltsjöbaden
Easter witch in Saltsjöbaden

March 2009 Saltsjöbaden near Stockholm Sweden

My mother made this she says “min mamma gjorde det här“:painted eggs in a basket as a Easter present. Easter has some nice traditions in Sweden as have several other days like Midsommar and Jul and the Swedes are good at keeping them.

Swedish Påsk predates Christianity. Folklore alleges that witches flew off on broomsticks to dance with the devil at Blåkulla.

On skärtorsdag, White Thursday, children dress up as påskkärringar (Easter hags), paint their faces and knock on neighbor’s doors for treats, much like American children do at Halloween.

I met the girl and her brother by accident and was immediately charmed by the way the were totally immersed in their role. A capability we find more difficult or even loose when growing up.
